Young Adelaide Voices

Young Adelaide Voices is a unique South Australian Choir School, catering for young people aged 5 – 35. There are six major choirs in YAV and the youth choir Young Adelaide Voices is our flagship performing choir.

This community based, not-for-profit organisation provides a well-rounded choral education, teaching excellence in singing, performing and musicianship within a friendly and positive environment. YAV Choristers grow in skill and maturity as they progress through the choirs and they develop in music, confidence and teamwork and the bonds of music and friendship reverberate throughout their lives.

In Adelaide, Young Adelaide Voices has performed and collaborated with the Adelaide International Festival of Arts and the International Fringe Festival, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and the State Opera of South Australia, where they have sung in orchestral classics, opera, music theatre and film. A highlight was their role as the Children’s Chorus in Britten’s War Requiem with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and members of YAV sang with The Rolling Stones at the Adelaide Oval.

YAV has become an internationally renowned organisation, having made nine overseas tours to Canada, Europe, UK, America, China, Hong Kong and Japan. In 2016 YAV toured to Europe, participating in youth music festivals in Salzburg, Bratislava and Verona. It was in Bratislava that they won three gold medals and Artistic Director Christie Anderson won a special award for Best Conductor of the Festival.

The choir has previously represented Australia in the 2005 World Festival of Children’s Choirs and at the European Youth Choral Festival in Neerpelt, Belgium where they have twice won First Prize With Honours, the 2012 World Choir Games in Cincinnati and the 9th International Golden Gate Youth Choir Festival in San Francisco, where they won three First Prizes.

In 2017 YAV have been involved in many projects, including a recording for ABC Classics with the ASO and doing the film music for Slingsby Theatre Company’s silent movie of Emile and the Detectives, with music composed for YAV by Quincy Grant.

YAV is proud to always be involved in iconic Adelaide Community events, such as Carols by Candlelight, Lord Mayor’s Christmas Gala and Credit Union Christmas Pageant.

YAV has a composer in residence program and fully supports the composition of new Australian choral works for youth choirs of all ages. In 2018 Young Adelaide Voices celebrates its 30th anniversary and the choir are excited to once again host the WATU Adelaide Youth Choir Festival.
